Putco Launches SmartTap Digital Ticketing System

On Monday, 18 November 2024, Putco introduced the SmartTap Digital Ticketing System, aiming to enhance commuter convenience, flexibility, and security. This initiative addresses persistent challenges in public transport, notably the prevalence of counterfeit tickets and the exploitation by ticket resellers.

Transition to Digital Ticketing

The SmartTap system allows passengers to load funds onto their cards, selecting from various trip categories tailored to their travel needs. Casual passengers can choose from 1, 2, or 4-trip options, while regular commuters have access to 10, 12, 44, and 52-trip packages, accommodating weekly and monthly travel requirements. This structure enables customers to align their ticket purchases with their specific commuting patterns.

The digital system was implemented on Wednesday, 13 November 2024. Recognising that many customers typically purchase tickets over the weekend, Putco anticipated a significant uptake starting Monday, 18 November. Putco noted that while the launch has been largely successful, some users have encountered challenges with the tap-and-go functionality, often due to unfamiliarity with the system. To address this, Putco has engaged in community outreach to educate passengers on the proper use of the new system.
